Previously, we discussed several responsibilities of the role of watchmen. You can review those articles here:
We have learned that the same way that we need men and women guarding the natural areas of our lives, we also need spiritual watchmen to provide warning for our souls. Today, we will discuss three more responsibilities to consider as we learn more about the role of spiritual watchmen.
————————
PUT SPIRIT FIRST
In scripture, the spiritual state of the people was always more important than the physical one. Improved spirituality always led to better physical conditions and, of course, the inverse was also true. Watchmen should always make their spiritual life a priority.
“My soul waits for the Lord More than the watchmen for the morning; Indeed, more than the watchmen for the morning.” Psalm 130:6 (NASB)
“For there will be a day when watchmen On the hills of Ephraim call out, ‘Arise, and let us go up to Zion, To the LORD our God.'” Jeremiah 31:6 (NASB)
WITNESS GOD’S SALVATION
This is the best part. Although the watchmen are the first to see the danger, they are also the first to see the victory.
“How lovely on the mountains Are the feet of him who brings good news, Who announces peace And brings good news of happiness, Who announces salvation, And says to Zion, “Your God reigns!” Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices, They shout joyfully together; For they will see with their own eyes When the LORD restores Zion.” Isaiah 52:7-8 (NASB)
“For there will be a day when watchmen On the hills of Ephraim call out, ‘Arise, and let us go up to Zion, To the LORD our God.'” Jeremiah 31:6 (NASB)
————————
The Watchman’s job is not exciting, glamorous nor is it likely to receive a lot of accolades. Indeed it is often boring, mundane and thankless. If you are the type of person that recognizes the importance of protecting your city or nation, and the people you love and care about, more than you do excitement, fame, and fortune, you may be called to be a watchman. I hope there are a lot of you out there, because we really need them.
Shalom!
