In “Biblical Keys to Hearing From God Part 1” we discussed the first three Biblical Keys of hearing God’s voice. You can review the article here:
Biblical Keys to Hearing From God Part 1
Today, we are going to discuss three more keys to seeking and hearing God’s voice in our lives.
4. Follow the Cloud
In the wilderness, Israel followed the Spirit of the Lord in the form of a Cloud by day and Pillar of fire by night. Today, if we have received Him, we have His wonderful Holy Spirit living inside us who guides and directs our comings and goings.
“Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.’” John 5:19 (NASB)
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” John 6:63 (NASB)
“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.” John 16:13 (NASB)
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.” John 14:26 (NASB)
5. Pray for a Prophet
With the Holy Spirit living inside us, we should not need to constantly seek out Men and Women of God to give us a “Word.” That being said, The Word of God does provide provision through the gift of Prophecy and Words of Knowledge. I believe that at least 90% of the time, true prophetic words will be confirmation of what you already have heard God say. I also believe that at least 9% is corrective words given because we are being too stubborn to listen. I’ll leave the last 1% up to you.
“Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances. But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good” 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21 (NASB)
6. Seek Godly Counsel
The key word here is “Godly!” Ideally you should seek out someone that doesn’t have a vested interest in the outcome of your decision other than to see God achieve His heart for you. Subjective counsel is usually bad counsel as personal agendas are hard for people to overcome even in the best of circumstances. Even Godly people should recuse themselves in these situations.
“Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory.” Proverbs 11:14 (NASB)
